On Longing Responses
"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale"
We always see these monuments in photos and we let the size of the picture deceive us into believing that they are just these tiny figures or that they are bigger than they actually are. It is not until we see others next to these monuments that we see just how big something truly is. This photo of people on the statue of Jesus is Rio is my favorite example because you see just how small the human is compared to this monumental figure.
"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience"
When I was in middle school, I got the opportunity to go to China for 2 and a half weeks with an organization called People to People: Ambassador Programs. I went with a group of 20 and had the best time of my life. I had pictures of the trip but lost them. Why I may not have the pictures anymore, I do have other mementos however. These two mementos are my favorite as I received these honors when my group when to a school for the mentally disabled and played with the kids, and when we went to a retirement home and bought groceries for the people living there. These are the most reliable means that authenticate my experience and time there which I will always cherish.
"The souvenir reduces the public, monumental, and 3D into the miniature that which can be enveloped by the body"
This charm has become something that has become one of my favorite things to wear. I got this charm from my cousin Alicia's wedding. She got married to a guy from the U.K., and some take aways they had for all the guests were wine charms with something American and something British on them. Mine had a cowboy boot and this telephone booth on it. Im a big fan of the show Doctor Who so I wanted to keep the charm and put it on a necklace. now every time I wear it I think of my cousin's wedding and of my favorite show.
"Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss"
Back in high school, I didn't really have any friends, well not any that I could really call that anyway. Then when I was in my sophomore year, I met my friend Andrew. He was two grades above me, and he was the only person who I could truly call my friend and that I could confide in about anything and that I could completely trust. I rarely saw him after he graduated because he tried joining the Air Force and so I only got to see him when he was stationed at places near my hometown. and now that Im at college, I don't see him at all and we barely text. Seeing this picture really makes me miss my close friendship with him and I cherish the days I was able to spend with him.
"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to posses both a specimen and a trophy"
When I was 18, my family did something really special for it. They took me on a Carnival cruise to the Caribbean and did special activities at all the stops. On the stop at the Cayman Islands, me and my mom swam with the sting rays. On the way back to the ship, this charm caught my eye. It is a charm made from black coral. The material that it was made from was strange and different so it was a kind of specimen from an exotic place.
